My Carrboro Arts Center Winter Course Lineup
Getting to Manual Mode
Start date: Friday, January 10 2025.
Schedule: Fridays, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
A "Getting to Manual" photography class is ideal for anyone who has been stuck on Auto but wants to take their photography skills to the next level by gaining full control over their camera settings. This class is perfect for those who are familiar with basic photography concepts but may need a refresher on how everything works together, or who just want guided help to confidently step away from Auto modes. Trust me when I say that shooting in Manual mode is easier than learning about all the other modes and what they do. Want to nail those landscapes, portraits, or action shots? Mastering manual mode lets you make creative choices, boost photo quality, and simplify your photography journey. You’ll feel like a rockstar photographer and maybe shoot like one, too.
Lightroom Classic 2: Photoshop and Critique
Start date: Friday, February 14 2025.
Schedule: Fridays, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Join two professional photographers and educators, Heather Craig and Barbara Tyroler to take a closer look at the wide variety of options available in Lightroom and Photoshop. The ideal student for this project-based class is someone who is ready to level up and polish their work, and prepare to exhibit or publish. The student should have a body of work to draw from, and some comfort working in Lightroom, and a basic awareness of Photoshop.
With access to state-of-the-art software editing and printing, Heather delivers skill building software techniques while Barbara provides personalized critique in an intimate group setting combining individualized portfolio development and introduction to printing techniques for fine art display.
Designed for students with basic Lightroom Classic experience. We'll dive into Photoshop for some advanced tweaks such as presets and actions so you can spend more time out with your camera.
Camera & Photography for Beginners
Start date: Thursday, January 9 2025.
Schedule: Thursdays, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Are you ready to figure out your fancy camera? Join our beginner-friendly photography class and embark on an exciting journey through the world of visual storytelling. In 8 classes, you’ll demystify your camera, learn the exposure triangle, compose like a pro, ‘see’ the light, capture moments, and start editing your photos. Each class will be a mix of lecture, activities and critique (your images or something we find online, if you don’t want to share, you don’t have to!). Each student will receive a personalized ‘cheat-sheet’ on how to work your camera, its specs, and be given homework. Students should have a camera they can set to Manual mode and bring their camera and lens, a charged battery, SD card (or whatever card your camera has), and a notebook and something to write with.
